To study design at the University of the Republic of San Marino means to get a college education in the field of product and visual design, to work with excellent teachers, to have access to qualified services, and to be part of a selected number of students.
The designer creates artifacts, tools and services of our world. More precisely, they work – along with professionals in business companies, institutions

or firms – to identify, plan, design, produce, communicate, distribute and dispose of all that is produced artificially to inhabit and live on our planet.
Just to name a few, studying design allows you to work in the research and development of individual and collective transportation; of home and office’s furniture; of books, newspapers, and websites layouts; and of electronic devices’ apps.

Quality of life
The geographical context of San Marino, the architectural landscape of the Ancient Monastery of Santa Chiara – home of the University – and the scientific and pedagogical excellence – all contribute significantly to the overall quality of the University environment and the ability to provide services to students and institutional partners.
Small class size and a low student-teacher ratio provide a great mentoring environment, offering students the opportunity to have a better personal interaction with their teachers. Students have access to computer, modeling, photography, and video labs. We provide ceramic and serigraphy workshops, in order to develop product ideation’s and realization’s skills.
We also offer students internship and placement tutoring service; we help students find internship and jobs in enterprises, institutions and professional firms.

The University of San Marino uses the European Ects Credit System, and has adopted the same grades system used in Italian universities.
The Italian grading system ranges from 18/30 to 30/30. The highest mark (30/30) is with distinction. All the exams under 18/30 are considered as “not passing” and thus are not registered on the final transcript of records.

Bachelor Degree

Established in 2005, the undergraduate degree in Design of the University of the Republic of San Marino is organized in collaboration with Alma Mater-University of Bologna and its degree is legally valid both in Italy and in San Marino. The undergraduate program in Design is characterized by some specific features. A small and selected number of students (one hundred each year) are admitted to the program to ensure a high level of attention to the students’ body and a close relationship between teachers and students.

Academic subjects are divided into theoretical classes – of great importance for an indispensable cultural and scientific academic education – technical classes, and design labs.
The labs are open to up to fifty students and are mostly led by designers working at the highest levels in the professional world. They are also characterized by an approach that combines theoretical knowledge with research and experimentation.

During the three years of the program, students participate in labs that focus on product, visual, and multimedia design; students in their third year can also specialize in the area of product or graphic design and graduate with a thesis, always with the support of their designated teachers. After graduating in Design, students can choose to work in the professional field or to continue their graduate studies in San Marino, Italy, and abroad.

Master Degree

Interaction & Experience Design
The graduate program in Design is held jointly with Alma Mater-University of Bologna and its degree is legally valid both in Italy and in San Marino, which serves as a pre-requisite for Ph.D programs and national and international second-level Master programs.
The changing context of contemporary design, characterized by the growing number of multimedia tools and digital devices, requires a specific approach to these new areas of design with a critical and responsible attitude. Our curriculum matches the most advanced international university programs, and considers the current status of the manufacturing industry and the demands of the job market.

The proposed curricula in Interaction & Experience Design is focused on the areas of contemporary design in which technology and interaction contribute significantly to building the experience. The curriculum is organized into design studios and theory classes, covering the areas of product design, visual design, motion, service and interaction design. Attendance is mandatory. The design disciplines constitute the core of the curriculum, around which the scientific, technological, critical and economic studies are structured, with the addition of technical training to support the design work.

The Program trains highly specialized professionals who may find employment as free-lance professionals, in business, in agencies and professional firms and in workplaces that require inter-disciplinary skills in product, visual and interaction design. In particular, employment opportunities may be found in cinema, television, multi-media publishing, the cultural industry, as well as in companies and firms interested in projects with a high-level degree of technology, digital agencies and companies working in the field of ICT – Information and Communication Technology, in research institutes and Research & Development centers.
